En 1929 un grupo de gente apasionada por la marioneta, procedente de siete países, creó la Union Internationale de la Marionnette (UNIMA) para promover y desarrollar está forma artística.

Me uní a la UNIMA alrededor de 1970 para conseguir cumplir mi sueño de toda la vida: las marionetas. Ahora, gracias a Internet, podemos instantáneamente, conectarnos con cientos de personas con ideas afines cruzando fronteras nacionales, políticas y religiosas alrededor del mundo. Programas grabados, espectáculos, conferencias, clases y talleres están disponibles las 24 horas del día, incluso algunos se transmiten en tiempo real. Ediciones académicas, publicaciones y fotografías aparecen con tan solo pulsar una tecla. Esta creciente popularidad, más allá de nuestros sueños más locos, ofrece innumerables oportunidades para establecer colaboraciones internacionales y trabajar juntos con el objetivo de la comprensión mutua a través de los títeres.

La Marioneta está presente en prácticamente todo el mundo. Actualmente hay disponible en internet cientos de horas de documentación, que permite que muchas formas tradicionales sean accesibles. La UNESCO ha reconocido a doce de ellas como representantes del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial (ICH), en su página web podemos información sobre las mismas, así como diapositivas y vídeos. En la Base de Datos del Centro Cultural Asia-Pacífico, se pueden ver por lo menos otras once tradiciones que incluyen títeres. Confiamos en que los internautas se sientan interesados en profundizar en la complejidad de las actuaciones y la antigüedad de sus raíces comunes. Podemos utilizar marionetas tradicionales para descubrir los puntos comunes que subyacen en nuestras diferencias culturales.

Una constante del arte tradicional es el cambio, por lo que la documentación juega un papel importante.

Después de casi cuarenta años de dedicación a este arte por cientos de nosotros, entusiastas de la marioneta, la UNIMA va a publicar, en su sitio web, una actualización de la Encyclopédie Mondiale des Arts de la Marionnette, publicada en papel en 2009, en tres idiomas, inglés y español, así como francés, esto hace que la historia del títere esté al alcance de todos. Se trata de una herramienta importante para los numerosos museos de todo el mundo, que han adquirido colecciones de títeres, y a otros dedicados exclusivamente a esta forma artística cuyas colecciones y catálogos se pueden encontrar en internet. Algunos están experimentando con imágenes en 3-D y con la elaboración de replicas con fines educativos. Facilitada por la comunicación a través de Internet el mantenimiento de la historia contribuye al desarrollo futuro.

Cientos de titiriteros contemporáneos de todo el mundo publican extractos de sus actuaciones en vivo en Internet para atraer audiencias y programadores. UNIMA patrocina actuaciones en vivo, festivales, conferencias y publicaciones y les da cobertura en su sitio web. Según lo soñado por el pequeño grupo fundador, los actuales socios de la UNIMA, pertenecientes a más de noventa países cooperan entre sí, dejando a un lado sus diferencias. El crecimiento exponencial de las actuaciones conlleva una mayor responsabilidad hacia nuestro público y hacia ellos mismos. Celebremos el Día Mundial de la Marioneta juntos como amigos dedicándolo a esta forma artística y compartiendo nuestras celebraciones en Internet, que hoy en día tanto nos une!

Nancy Lohman Staub, nativa de Nueva Orleáns, Luisiana, EE.UU., fue una de las editoras de planificación de la Encylopédie Mondiale des Arts de la Marionnette. (World Encyclopedia of Puppetry Arts) y continuó como asesora científica. Formó parte del Comité Ejecutivo de la UNIMA como Vicepresidenta, en la Comisión de Publicaciones, en la Comisión de Investigación, en la Comisión de Patrimonio y actualmente forma parte de la Comisión de Justicia Social.

Dirigió el Festival Mundial de Marionetas de 1980 y el XIII Congreso de UNIMA en el Centro John F. Kennedy para las Artes Escénicas en Washington, DC. Asesora en la creación de la Fundación Jim Henson en Nueva York para apoyar el campo de la marioneta en América.

Fue Presidenta de Puppeteers of América y Vicepresidenta de UNIMA-USA. Fundadora y presidenta del Comité Asesor del Center for Puppetry Arts Museum en Atlanta, Georgia. Publicó numerosos artículos y ensayos para los catálogos del museo. Hace mucho tiempo dirigió un pequeño teatro de títeres en Nueva Orleans, Louisiana durante más de 10 años.
